History
Outside of Holland, Bolgatty Palace is the largest palace erected by the Dutch. In Cochin, this palace is still a popular tourist attraction. The Ernakulum monarch was permitted to build this palace for trading purposes in 1740 AD. The Portuguese, French, and British occupied this palace as their residence and office during the colonial wars of Imperialism. During their journey to India, many colonial governors stayed here. For a long time, it was also utilized as a guest house for East India Company officials. It was in the control of the Company until Independence. The Kerala State Archeological Department afterward took possession of the palace and declared it a heritage property.
Bolgatty Palace has been transformed into a heritage hotel resort with ayurvedic centers, a 9-hole golf course, and a large swimming pool. Bolgatty Palace's historical significance is well known, as is the reason why it is regarded as a significant landmark in Cochin, Kerala.
Architecture
The European model is used to construct Bolgatty Palace. The most often encountered sea rocks, clay tiles, teak woods, clay bricks, and mount bricks were employed as building materials. This was primarily constructed in the style of a mansion to house colonial officials. There are numerous sitting rooms, a swimming pool, and a golf course on the premises. Many boat platforms have been built around its shore to allow visitors to arrive from all directions on the island. This palace is completely furnished with luxury and convenience items imported from European countries.
In and around the palace, there are magnificent works of wood that are exquisitely carved. Colored glass was used on the windows and doors of this mansion. Clay tiles are used to cover the majority of the roofs. There are one to two-story buildings here. It has pillared verandahs, as well as various pavilions built along the shore.
