History
Nawab Shah Jahan Begum of Bhopal began building the Taj-ul-Masajid in the newly-built walled neighborhood of Shahjahanabad. The precise year construction began is unknown, but believed it was in 1871. After Shah Jahan Begum died in 1901, her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum proceeded to build the mosque till the end of her life. Munshi Hussain Talab, Noor Mahal Talab, and Motia Talab are the three water bodies in which the structure was designed.
Due to a shortage of money, the mosque was never completed, and construction did not resume until 1971. The Emir of Kuwait contributed themes from 13th-century Syrian mosques to refurbish the entrance in memory of his late wife.
Architecture
Mughal architecture is heavily influenced by the Taj-ul-Masajid Bhopal. The mosque has a pink exterior with two 18-story high octagonal minarets with marble domes, a magnificent main corridor with appealing pillars, and marble flooring similar to that of Delhi's Jama Masjid and Lahore's Badshahi Mosque. It includes a courtyard in the center with a big ablution tank. The main prayer hall includes a double-storeyed entryway with four recessed archways and nine cusped multifold apertures. Through squinting arches, the gigantic pillars of the hall support 27 ceilings, 16 of which are adorned with beautiful petalled motifs.
The mosque also has a zenana (women's gallery), which is unusual given that women's prayer at home was the standard at the time the mosque was built.
