Chittorgarh Fort – The Saga of Bravery

1. Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort is referred as the largest fort of India. It is located beside the Gambheri River. This huge fort is located over a hill and is standing at a height of 180 m and is spread in the area of 280 hectare. It has been a centre of power in Rajasthan from 7th century to 16th century. What is more interesting about this fort is its association with the Indian Epic Mahabharta and great Indian poetess Meera Bai.

2. History of Chittorgarh Fort

It is being said that the past is a seed which is being sowed to grow as a tree in present. What we receive in present is the fruit of what we have slowed in past, thus same goes with the history of Chittorgarh Fort. The fort is comprises with many interesting stories with it. Built in 7th century by many Mauryans rulers, the fort was the capital of Mewar of Gehlot and Sisodia kings from 8th century AD to 16th century AD. The fort has been named after brave Mauryan King, Chittrangad Maurya. As per history goes, Chittorgarh Fort was attacked thrice and each time it has been protected by the chivalry of Rajput kings. Many Rajput rulers have laid their life on stake for the protection of this fort from invaders. Among all the three attacks, the first one became an unforgettable which gave a huge example of women empowerment.

It was year 1303 when Fort of Chittorgarh was attacked by Allaudin Khilji to fulfill his desire for Rani Padmini, whose beauty was talking point in all India. The attacked led to a huge destruction of life and property. Ultimately Rani Padmini jumped in a huge pyre with her maidens and other queens instead of getting into the hands of Khilji. This was called Jauhar. Next attack was done in 1535 by Sultan Bahadur Shah and the third and last attack was done by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1567 and both the time led to two more Jauhars which were committed by both men and women who preferred death over surrender.

3. Architecture of Chittorgarh Fort

Christened as the largest fort of India, Chittorgarh Fort is one of the massive fort and most spectacular fort of India. In Rajasthan Tours the fort holds a massive part. The path of the Chittorgarh fort is having many “Pols” the gates. The major gate is the Ram Pol which has the temple in its vicinity. With that there are two other cenotaphs which are located near Padal Pol dedicated to two warriors namely Jaimal and Kala who were killed by Akbar in 1567. Padal Pol Bhairon Pol and Ganesh Pol are some of the other pols in the fort.

Apart from gates (Pols) the fort is also having many places such as Rana Kumbha Palace, Padmini’s Palace and other. Both the palaces are the beautiful and the wonder of Rajput architectural style. One can also find many temples in the fort such as Sammidheshwara Temple, Jain temple, Kalika Mata temple and many more which are compact with noteworthy carvings and intricate carvings. There is also Gaumukh reservoir (water tank) in the fort; it is the same fort in which Khilji was allowed to see the reflection of Rani Padmini and which led to a hideous battle and the jauhar.

4. The Towers in the Fort

The fort is compact with two towers namely Vijay Stambh and Kirti Stambh, carved in the glorious Rajputi architecture. Kirti Stambh which is also known as the Tower of Fame was built in 12th century and is dedicated to first Jain thinker Adinath. While Vijay Stambh which is also known as the “The tower of victory”, is built as a tribute to Maharana Kumbha to memorialize his triumph over Mohammed Khilji in 15th century.

5. Meera Temple

It is believed that famous poetess and saint and a great devotee of Lord Krishna is also associated with this huge fort. As evidence one can find Meera temple in the fort near the Kirti Stambh. It was built in Indo Aryan architectural style by Rana Kumbha.  Meera Bai devoted her life in the name of Shri Krishna and created many bhajans and dedicated to Lord Krishna. Legend has that Meera Bai under the protection of Lord Krishna as she was survived after consuming poison given by her in-laws.
