Read More on Annai Velankanni Shrine
History
The first church building was constructed in 1972, and it was later enlarged. Mother Mary, holding the infant Jesus in her arms, is said to have appeared in the late Rev. Fr. P. T. Arulappa's dream, which inspired the construction of this church to honour Our Lady of Good Health. The imposing 97-foot belfry was dedicated in 1972 by the then-chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
Our Mother's apparitions in Vailankanni in the 16th and 17th centuries inspired the construction of this shrine.
Architecture
The Basilica is constructed in the Gothic architectural style. In 1928, the Southern side was enlarged, and in 1933, the Northern side. Our Lady's Tank, Church Museum, Priests' Residence, Offering Center, Stations of the Cross, Stations of the Rosary, Shrine Mega Mahal, and Velankanni Beach are all located within the Shrine Basilica. Except for the roof, which is composed of red tiles, the building is painted white.
