History
The roots of the Hauz Khas can be traced back to the 13th century when the Delhi Sultanate was ruling over the region. The place got its name from a water tank by the same name, which was built by Alauddin Khalji to supply water to the newly built Siri Fort. During those times, the area around this reservoir also had a mosque, a madrasa, tombs, pavilions, and several other buildings built in the Islamic style of architecture. The Hauz Khas Complex now houses all these historical structures.
It was DLF around the 1960s, who developed the areas surrounding this medieval complex into a modernized neighborhood. With the arrival of designer boutiques by renowned fashion designers during the mid-1980s, the place started transforming into a posh urban zone. The village saw the emergence of several restaurants followed by cafes, pubs, and bars at the end of the 1990s. All these new things changed this historic neighborhood into a happening party spot in Delhi.
Hauz Khas today is teeming with a wide range of ancient and modern attractions, which makes it undoubtedly one of the most lively tourist places in Delhi. Some of the finest bars, chill cafés, pubs, and restaurants in Delhi are located in this part of the city.
Another key attraction here is the light and sound show held at the main complex in the evenings by Delhi Tourism Department. If you are someone who loves to take pictures, then you are the perfect spot. A.N. Jha Deer Park, on weekends, becomes the perfect picnic spot for the family crowd.
Architecture
Hauz Khas is a mind-blowing mishmash of ancient and modern architectural styles. Splendid buildings featuring Mughal architectural styles are something to admire. At this time, modern buildings have taken over alongside these age-old edifices, lending the place a unique look. Lush green open spaces and well-structured walkways have surrounded the place. The place retains its quaint charm even in the face of new-generation buildings and an upscale ambiance.
