History
A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, sought to establish ISKCON centers in India. When he returned to India in 1971 following his success in spreading ISKCON throughout the Western world, he asked Giriraj Maharaj to go to Madras and preach activities, which resulted in many people signing up as life patrons. In February 1972, Prabhupada paid a visit to Madras and gave a lecture. A center was established in 1975 in 50 Aspiran Gardens, 2nd Street, Kilpauk, and was later relocated to Kilpauk Garden Road. In 1988, the center relocated to T. Nagar, where the Chennai ISKCON congregation grew significantly. "Now our European and American guys are preaching in South India, and great, big acaryas have received them," Prabhupada said during a morning walk on December 18, 1975.
However, the endeavor to fulfill Prabhupada's goal to build a "beautiful temple" in Chennai did not bear fruit until 2000, when devotees led by Bhanu Swami found 6.5 acres of land in Injambakkam and purchased it immediately for the temple's construction. The temple was entirely funded by donations from Chennai residents. On March 17, 2002, work on the first phase of the project began. The temple was established with the help of roughly 8,000 life patrons and devotee contributions. The temple cost 100 million dollars and was built on 45,000 square feet of land.
Architecture
The picture of the world, or bhu-mandala, on the marble floor, marks the entrance to the temple. The temple is built on five stories and covers 1.5 acres of land. The first floor has the main temple hall, which is 7,000 square feet in size, as well as an auditorium for cultural and spiritual performances on the ground floor and a prasadam hall in the basement.
The temple's main goal is to turn materialistic minds into spiritual singularities of perfect love. This is exemplified by a magnificent chandelier that casts a rainbow of colors across the walls and ceiling. Various Vastu shastra characteristics are also visible in the temple. A devotee can find books and souvenirs on spirituality and Hindu philosophy near the portico.
