Jantar Mantar

About Jantar Mantar Delhi

Between 1724 and 1730, five astronomical observatories in northern India were ascertained by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur. The observatories, or "Jantar Mantar’s," as they are commonly known, consist of several distinct structures, each with a specialized function for astronomical measurement.

These structures, with their striking geometric form combinations on a large scale, have piqued the interest of architects, artists, and art historians all over the world, but they are largely unknown to the general public. With an intriguing history that precedes modern civilization, this observatory was far ahead of its time and showed the ancient ways of interpreting stars and skies.

Although it is no longer a working science center, it is preserved as a monument and hosts educational activity sessions, guided tours, music, and light shows. The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is one of the world's largest observatories, including incredible stone constructions that aid in the interpretation of celestial body positions and the calculation of local time. Tourists, historians, astronomers, architects, mathematicians, and geographers go to Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II erected a cluster of fixed stones and very big constructions in the early 18th century. Each has a specific application. It was built primarily due to the Maharaja's fascination with celestial objects and the movement of various bodies in the sky.

The history of Jantar Mantar Jaipur is that it contains 19 large instruments, each with a specific purpose, the most popular and visible of which is the Samrat Yantra. It is regarded as the country's largest sundial.  The magnificent monument's construction was completed in 1734. The main feature of the instruments is the ability to observe celestial objects with the naked eye. It is based on Ptolemaic positional astronomy, which has parallels throughout history with numerous civilizations.
