History
The Kaliadeh Palace Ujjain is located beautifully in the middle of the Shipra River. The river cruises through narrow trenches here. The Kaliadeh Palace history has a tale linked to it. It is said that a Sultan lost his life by drowning in the river that passed through the palace premise. Every twelve years a fair is conducted here and tourists come in large numbers to be a part of it. The ancient palace has two Kunds one of which is Brahma Kund, this Kund has been mentioned in the Hindu Puranas.
Back then this place was known as the Sun Temple and was initially built during the reign of Muhammad Khilji in 1458 AD. The original palace was demolished by Sultan Nasiruddin Khilji and then the palace we see today was built. The palace was visited by Emperor Akbar and Jehangir, both the Mughal Royals were taken aback by its beauty. The two Persian inscriptions found in the corridors of the palace stand witness to their visit. The Pindaris caused a lot of harm to the magnificent structure which was later renovated by Madhav Rao Scindia. The winds crossing the vintage fort hum an ancient song creating a vibe worth experiencing.
Architecture
Kaliadeh Palace architecture is easy on the eye as it is constructed along the lines of the Persian style of architecture. The Kaliadeh Palace is surrounded by the river Kshipra as it flows from both sides. This palace has two man-made water tanks and a picturesque view. This palace is a picnic spot for the locals. The Surya Kunda and Brahma Kunda are two tanks and back in the golden days, this palace was known as the Sun temple. The middle dome of the palace is extremely gorgeous and breathtaking. The walls in this dome are inscribed with Persian quotes. The original Sun temple was destroyed by the Pindaris and in the 1920’s it was renovated by Madhavrao Scindia. It is located close to the Kalbhairav Temple.
