History

Kanch Mandir, a small Jain shrine in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, is a glass architectural marvel. It was constructed in the twentieth century by Indore's Sir Seth Hukumchand, with materials sourced from diverse places around Italy and Europe. Sir Seth Hukumchand was a business mogul and one of India's most successful traders. He built Sheesh Mahal, his royal residence at Itwaria Bazar, Indore, and near to it was the construction of Kanch Mandir. Both of these locations had a royal architecture that included the use of white stone. The temple is stunning, with gleaming mirror work adorning every surface. Deities of Tirthankaras can be found throughout the temple, as it is a Jain temple.

Architecture

Thousands of mirrors cover the temple's walls, ceilings, floors, pillars, and doorknobs. The temple's ambiance is enhanced by the exquisitely carved Chinese lantern-type glass lighting and cut glass chandeliers. The interiors of Indore's Kanch Mandir are quite stunning. More than 50 murals illustrating Jain legends can be found in the temple. These glass artworks portray scenarios of Jainism conversion as well as images of sinners who will be punished in the afterlife. The pictures of Lord Mahavira in plain black onyx and the usage of glass multiply the three statues of Lord Shantinath, Aadinath, and Mahavira erected there into an unlimited number. The temple is designed to look like a medieval mansion from the outside, with a canopied balcony and a shikhara.
