History
The origin of this historical Temple cannot be stated with conviction, just like many other glorious temples. However, according to some scholarly studies it was originally built in the 7th century by the Pallavas rulers who were ruling over South India during that period of time. The temple has a special mention in the Saiva canonical stories Tevaram, which are written by the great Shaivite saints Nayanars of the very same century.
The Kapaleeshwar Temple Chennai is said to have been located along the seashore of Mylapore in those tales, but the current temple structure now stands 1-1.5 kilometers from the seashore. This discrepancy allows the scholars to conclude that the original temple which was built by the Pallava rulers was actually located near the seashore. However, the Portuguese landed here and went on demolishing the temple along with several other temples, and the current one was constructed by the Vijayanagar kings from the remains of the ruins of the ancient structure.
Architecture
This temple was originally built in authentic Dravidian style, but later it was mixed with the Vijaynagari style during its relocation. The main temples belong to the Kapaleeswarar form of Lord Shiva, which is beautifully represented by a Shivalinga and Goddess Parvati who is called Karpagambal by the devotees.
The temple has two huge gates with stucco figures all over it, called Gopurams. These colossal gates are very typical of any other temple in South India. Another gate, which is 120 feet or 40 meters high is present on the eastern side.
