Located near Gole Market in New Delhi Birla Mandir Delhi is one of the marvellous Hindu temples and is one of the many Birla Mandirs constructed across India. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Laxminarayan as the name suggests and is better known as Lord Vishnu or the preserver in the Tridev comprising of Vishnu, Brahma, and Mahesh.

Lord Narayan is with his companion Goddess Laxmi, hence the temple is known as Laxminarayan Temple. This temple is built by the industrialist Baldev Das Biral along with his sons from 1933 to 1939. This temple is more than a religious site. On the condition that it will be open for people of all castes, the temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. 

The Laxminarayan Temple is a major tourist attraction and it is situated towards the west of Cannaught Place in Delhi. It comprises many shrines, fountains, sculptures of national and religious importance, and it is spread over an area of 7.5 acres. Geeta Bhavan is also there in the temple that is used for the lessons. During Janmashtami and Diwali festivals, the Laxmi Narayan temple is a major tourist attraction among travellers and the localities.

History


This magnificent monument was built by the very popular industrialist Birla family and it is also known as the Birla Temple. In the year 1933, BD Birla along with his son Jugal Kishore Birla started the construction of the Laxminarayan Temple Delhi. Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh was the person who laid the foundation stone of this popular temple. Throughout the making of the temple, Pandit Vishwanath Shastri was the guide. 

The concluding ceremony and Yagya were performed by Swami Keshav Nandji once the construction of the temple was completed. A unique condition was made by Mahatma Gandhi as he was going to inaugurate the Birla Mandir, the entry into the temple will not be defined by the caste of the pilgrims or devotees. Whether he is a brahmin or a shudra, he stressed that devotees or pilgrims of all castes should be allowed to pray in the temple.

Architecture


The Laxmi Narayan Temple is also an exquisite piece of architecture and not just a place of religious importance. Sris Chandra Chatterjee was the chief architect of the temple and one of the major leaders of the modern Indian Architecture Movement. As the country witnessed the Swadeshi Movement it was a very prominent time. 

The Birla Mandir architecture speaks volumes of the times it was constructed in. In the architecture of the temple, you can see the Swadeshi Movement of the early twentieth century. Throughout the monument, a whole lot of ecclesiastical texts have been used. Chandra Chatterjee was brilliant architecture known for his modern mindset. Chandra Chatterjee used modern technologies and materials to create the monument while keeping the religious and national importance of the place unchanged. 

The Laxminarayan Temple Delhi is a three-storeyed building. This temple was built in the Nagara style of temple architecture. Around the temple walls, you can see the scenes from the golden yuga. Under the mentorship of Acharya Vishwanath Shastri, hundreds of crafters from Benaras had put together their craft to carve the icons around the temple. Marble stone is used in carving the icons which were imported from Jaipur.

There are some activities that tourists, devotees, and pilgrims can enjoy while visiting the Birla Mandir Delhi.

  • In the morning and evening, you can participate in the Aarti (Prayer) conducted in the Laxminarayan Temple. 
  • You can visit and take the blessings of the side temples of Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Durga on the left side of the temple. 
  • During the Navratri festival, the temple attracts many devotees and pilgrims across the city. 
  • You can get mesmerized by the Nagara Style architecture of the temple and click some beautiful pictures of the temple. 
  • Take the lessons in the Geeta Bhavan situated inside the Laxminaryan Temple Delhi. This Bhavan is used for giving spiritual teachings and lessons.

  • Entry is free to this mandir for all kinds of tourists and devotees. You haven’t charged a single penny to visit this beautiful temple. 
  • Cameras, mobile phones, and other electronic items can be submitted at the entrance gate. For keeping your goods and items safe, lockers are available at this temple. No charge will be taken from you for these lockers. 
  • It is very good to visit the temple around the Aarti time in the evening or morning as per your convenience.
  • Wear proper clothes while visiting the temple.
  • The time of Janmashtmi, Ram Navmi, and Diwali is considered as the best time to visit the Birla Mandir. During the festive season, one can see the colorful decorations at the temple.

If you want to visit the Laxminarayan Temple Delhi fully, then you have to visit according to the Birla Mandir timings or during the Aarti time. As the summer in Delhi becomes unbearable, so the best time to visit is from October to February as the weather remains chilly and moderate.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
