History

The Lotus Temple is a Bahai House of Worship that opened to the public in December 1986, also known as Mashriqu'l-Adhkár. Like all other Bahai temples, it is dedicated to the unity of religions and humanity. Here, people of all faiths are invited to pray, worship, and read their texts. The Lotus Temple in Delhi is considered one of the world's seven great Bahai Houses of Worship, and the only one in Asia. It was made by Fariborz Sahba, an Iranian architect who received it for the project even before it was built. It went on to win several prizes after that.

The Lotus Temple takes its name from the building's form. It is a nine-sided architecture, like every other Bah Mashriq, in keeping with the Bah belief in the mystical characteristics of the number nine. Set on an elevated platform amid a 26-acre area of groomed gardens and encircled by nine ponds with red sandstone paths, the white marble tower rises to a height of more than 130 feet.  The temple is made up of 27 individual marble "petals" that are placed into threes to form nine sides (leading to nine entrances into a central chamber) and nines to form three concentric circles.

The first ring's petals face outward, creating canopies over the nine entrances. The outer hall is covered by the second ring. The petals curl inward in the innermost ring to partially enclose the central prayer area, which seats roughly 2,500 people. The structure's top appears to be open, but it fact has a glass-and-steel roof that lets in natural light. The overall effect is of a floating lotus flower that is about to bloom and is surrounded by its leaves.

Architecture

Biomimicry: The Lotus Temple is best known for its distinctive flowerlike shape, which was designed to mirror the beauty and symmetry of the lotus flower, including the Bahá' Faith, Hinduism, and Buddhism which is also revered by many Eastern and Indian religions. One of the most well-known examples of biomimicry in modern architecture is the Lotus Temple.
Numeric Symmetry: In the Bahá' religion, the number nine is considered sacred. For balance and beauty, the Lotus Temple (like many other Bahá' homes of worship) includes the number nine in a symmetrical pattern—for example, the edifice is built in a nine-sided dome. The structure's 27 concrete and marble petals are divided into three types: nine entry leaves (which mark the doorways), nine outer leaves (which constitute the roof area), and nine inner leaves (which form the internal space) (which enclose the central hall in an interior dome).
Significant structural integrity: The Lotus Temple may appear fragile, but the construction crew worked hard to ensure that the structure was strong enough to resist New Delhi's regular earthquakes. Construction workers created each petal as a free-standing marble and concrete structure to assure the building's security.
Environmental consideration: The Lotus Temple was designed to prioritize environmental sustainability, with solar panels on the roof generating 20% of the building's electricity needs, openings at the top and bottom of the structure to encourage natural ventilation, and a large glass and steel skylight at the top of the structure to let in natural light.
