History
Previously, the small settlement of Padmanabhapuram was known as Kalkulam, and it served as the capital of the strong Venad Kingdom. The Venad rulers didn't just establish themselves in Kalkulam. Royal palaces and temples were also built in Udaygiri, Eraniel, and other adjacent locations, the relics of which may still be seen. The headquarters were moved to Kalkulam due to the security afforded by the mountains.
The history of Padmanabhapuram Palace dates back to the 1600s. During the reign of Iravi Varma Kulasekharan Perumal, it was constructed. The great palace, Kalkulathu Koikkal, is at its heart. In historical sources, it was also known as Darpakulangara Koikkal. Anizham Tirunal Marthanda Varma ordered the refurbishment of the palace, as well as the erection of a stone fort surrounding it, in the eighteenth century. During his reign, several of the structures in the current palace complex were built or refurbished.
Architecture
The palace was dedicated to Shree Padmanabha Swamy, the Venads' protective deity, by Marthanda Varma. Padmanabhapuram Kottaram was the new name for the palace (Kottaram meaning palace, in Malayalam).
Padmanabhapuram was taken by British soldiers in 1809, and the royal family relocated to Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). They used to come to the palace during the Navratri holiday celebrations, though. The spectacular celebrations ended in the 1840s, and Padmanabhapuram Palace began to crumble.
This historic palace was rediscovered in 1934 by J. H. Cousins, the Art Advisor to the Travancore Government, and R. Vasudeva Poduval of the Archaeology Department. Padmanabhapuram Palace Kerala was renovated into a museum complex with the help of Shree Chithira Tirunal Bala Rama Varma, the last Maharaja of the princely kingdom of Travancore.
