History
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was brutally assassinated on 30th January 1948 and his body was cremated at a spot near the Yamuna the following day. Raj Ghat marks the exact location where the Father of the Nation was consigned to flames and his last rites took place. Keeping in mind Gandhiji’s philosophy and practice of living a modest life, a simple memorial was built at this place.
Raj Ghat New Delhi was originally the name of an old gate that existed in the walled city of Delhi called Shahjahanabad. The gate used to open on the west bank of the River Yamuna at a place called Raj Ghat. Later on, the area where the Gandhi memorial was built came to be referred to as Raj Ghat Memorial.
Raj Ghat area also houses the samadhis of many respected Indian leaders, including former Presidents and Prime Ministers of the country. The latest addition to the Raj Ghat area is the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, the memorial of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee constructed in 2018.
Architecture
The Gandhi memorial at Raj Ghat New Delhi is a black marble square platform. The simple structure has the words ‘Hey Ram’ inscribed on it since these were the last words uttered by the late Father of the Nation. Bhuta in keeping with Gandhiji’s policy of simple living and high thinking designed the memorial.
