History
Loganatha Mudaliar constructed the Ripon Building. It was named after Lord Ripon, a British Indian Governor-General. In 1909, the Earl of Minto placed the foundation stone. He was India's Viceroy and Governor-General at the time.
It took four years to construct the structure. The Madras Municipal Corporation was established hereafter it was completed in 1913. At the time, its president was P. L. Moore. After operating from a variety of locations, including Errabalu Chetty Street, the Municipal Corporation of Madras settled at the Ripon Building in 1913, with P. L. Moore as President at the time of the inauguration. Over 3,000 members of the city's elite attended the inaugural event.
Architecture
The Ripon Building in Chennai is an excellent example of Neoclassical architecture. The Gothic, Ionic, and Corinthian architectural styles are combined in this grand three-story white edifice. It attracts a large number of visitors each day due to its superb detailing and décor.
It's one of the rare buildings that hasn't lost its allure over time. Bricks were used to build the walls, which were then set and plastered with lime mortar. Its roof is made of teak wood. Cuddapah Slate was used on the ground level of this construction. However, marble has taken its place.
Activities
- The Ripon Building is a rectangular structure with a tall central tower that houses a clock. One of the biggest attractions is the Westminster Quarter chiming clock, which was installed by Oakes and Co. It has a mechanical key system that must be wound on a daily basis.
- It is still used as a government office building, however certain heritage tours of the city stop here, frequently in conjunction with a visit to the surrounding Fort St. George area.
- There is a large lawn in front of the colossal Ripon Building where you can relax. Lord Ripon's statue is placed on the lawn. A statue of Sir Thiyagaraya Chetty stands in the center of the structure.
