It is also known as the National Shrine of Saint Thomas. The gorgeous structure that we see today was built in 1523 AD, by the Portuguese. Later in 1896, British Madras made an attempt to build the Church in Neo-Gothic style, which was constructed by the British Architects in the 19th century. The Portuguese statue of Mother Mary was brought from Lisbon to Santhome Church in 1523 and now it is kept at the left side of the church altar, known as Our Lady of Mylapore.

History


St Thomas Cathedral Basilica is an ancient church, which brings all the references from the British, and Foreign Groups in India. The most important fact about the Santhome Church is that it is one of the three churches in the world, that is built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus. The other two churches apart from St Thomas Cathedral Basilica are St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain.

Bible says Saint Thomas was born in the Judea state of the Roman Province. He is considered to be one of the 12 Disciples of Jesus. He is said to have touched the wound of Jesus when Jesus rose after his death. In AD 52, he visited Kerala, for preaching Christianity in India. He moved on to Chennai. He was killed in AD 72. His disciples chose to make the tomb, and he was buried in Mylapore. Muslims also respected his tomb and took care of it. They called it Bothuma.

St Thomas Cathedral Basilica displays gracious architecture in terms of beauty, skill, and magnificence. The St Thomas Cathedral Basilica Church is built with the style of Gothic revival architecture, which is a popular late 19th-century style of architecture. The church has a very creative Rib Vault roof ceiling made of Teakwood. As the history of Saint Thomas says in his wound-touching story of Jesus, the Church’s 16 windows and 34 stained glass represent the same incident.

Getting In chennai

BY AIR

The best way to get from Madras Airport (MAA) to St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica is to use Metro and bus which costs ₹40 - ₹55 and takes 1h 7m. In a faster way, one can take a cab or taxi to the church, which would cost around ₹440 - ₹550 and it will take approx. 20-30 minutes.

BY ROAD

There are many bus stations near Santhome Church. Some of them are T. Nagar - Foreshore Estate, Foreshore Estate - Vadapalani, Saligramam - Fore Shore Estate. One can take buses from any local area, and reach here.

BY RAIL

There is no direct train from Madras Airport (MAA) to St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica. However, there are local trains departing from Trisulam (Airport Local Train station) and arriving at Tirumailai via Chennai Fort. The journey, including transfers, takes approximately 1h 6m. There are buses and trains available from different locations too.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
