History
The history of the National Rail Museum Delhi goes back to 1962 when it was just a simplistic idea. However, the idea began to take shape in 1970 under the sincere advice of rail enthusiast Michael Graham. Shri V. V. Giri, the then President of India was the one who laid the foundation stone of the building in Chanakyapuri which was called the Railway Transport Museum ( R. T. M.) at that time.
It was constructed to cover histories of roadways, airways, waterways in addition to railways. It was inaugurated by the then railway Minister- Kamlapati Tripathi in 1977. It was later in the year 1995, this museum was established as a full-fledged railway museum and was called National Railway Museum.
Architecture
The National Rail Museum Delhi provides an insight into the amazing past of the Indian Railways which is supposed to be more than 140 years old. M.G. Satto, a British architect, was the one who planned and constructed this museum on 1st February in the year 1977. The carpet area for this museum was taken as 10 acres and the museum is considered an integral part of the Indian heritage. The Rail Museum houses various types of locomotives and also displays a range of replicas of train coaches and engines.
Activities
A new innovative restaurant is located inside the premises of the Rail Museum, named The Rails, here you can have a fancy dinner in a pretentious rail coach.
The restaurant is inspired by the designs of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and it also has a similar dome. The food here is brought in steam engines and served to the guests sitting at different tables named after different railway stations in India.
You can also enjoy the ride of Steam Loco Simulator, which costs about 150 rupees.
3D Virtual Coach Ride at the museum costs about 100 rupees.
Joy Train at the museum costs only 20 rupees.
Tips for visiting
Entry inside the museum is closed after 4:30 pm.
Alcohol is strictly prohibited inside the place.
Do not worry about your hunger, there’s a fine restaurant available inside to take care of your need.
Remember, on weekends the entry price doubles up so keep that in mind.
The museum remains closed on Mondays.

The winter season is the best time to visit the museum. Because in summer you will not be able to enjoy your rides due to the scorching sun and in the rainy season the water will create chaos.
