Valluvar Kottam is a monument in Nungambakkam, Chennai. It is the memorial monument of the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar, who wrote the famous 'Thirukkural'. The Valluvar Kottam is a chariot-shaped monument 128 meters high and is a replica of the Thiruvarur temple. Inside the chariot, a life-sized statue of Thiruvalluvar has also been installed. The chariot is not the only place in Valluvar Kottam, there is an auditorium adjacent to it. The chariot's design attracts the tourists who visit here. It was the largest hall in Asia which could accommodate about 4000 people. The granite columns shaped in the book leaves can be seen here, holding 1330 verses of Thirukkural inscriptions in them. The Valluvar Kottam Chennai is the symbol of Tamil culture. The auditorium often acts as the venue for handicrafts and handloom exhibitions. The Valluvar Kottam exhibition is an important event here.

The Valluvar Kottam monument history says that it was once the Nungambakkam Lake. But when time passed it became the waste ground of Nungambakkam. Later,  M. Karunanidhi the then chief minister executed the plan to build a monument here.
The Valluvar Kottam timings are between morning 8:30 am and evening 5:30 pm. Even though it has an entry fee, they are very low. For adults, only  ₹3 and ₹2 for children are charged here as entry fees.

History


The great Thiruvalluvar is a significant poet of Tamil Nadu and his history in literature has given him the title of the 'Divine Poet'. As a token of respect and honor to him, the former chief minister M Karunanidhi executed the plan to build the Valluvar Kottam monument in 1976. Also, the land which was once a wasteland turned out to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Tamil Nadu.

Architecture


The unique architecture of the Valluvar Kottam monument was designed by Ganapati Sthapati, who is the same architect of the Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari.

Around 3000 blocks of granite were used to build the Valluvar Kottam chariot and the big auditorium. Some of these granites weigh around 40 tonnes. The granites are covered by Kalamkari drawings. Another feature of the monument is that it has no pillar and stands without support. The wheels of the chariot are 11 feet in diameter and about 2 meters thick.

  • What you can see on the inscriptions of the granite stones are the 1330 verses in Thirukkural. Take a closer look at it and try to read them if you know Tamil.
  • Please do not try to write anything on the granite as it may damage its original look.
  • When you visit the monument do not forget to visit the auditorium where the exhibition takes place.

Best time to visit


The best time to visit Valluvar Kottam is during winter, as Chennai usually has temperate, hot weather. This could be between November and February when you can escape from the hot weather of Chennai and its monsoon.

Getting In chennai

BY AIR

You may hire a cab to Valluvar Kottam via Grand Southern Trunk Road and reach within 34 minutes.

BY ROAD

You can board a bus to the Valluvar Kottam Bus stop and then cover a walking distance of 300 km.

BY RAIL

From Tambaram West Railway station, it will take 46 minutes to reach Valluvar Kottam by cab via the Theni-Trichy highway. Or from Tambaram Station board a train towards Chennai Beach to Kodambakkam, then walk 6 minutes to Mahalingapuram, from where you have to board the bus 17D towards Broadway Bus Terminal. Arrive at Valluvar Kottam bus stop and walk for 2 minutes to reach the monument.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
