Swami Vivekananda established two monasteries in Colombo after his arrival in January 1897 with a small group of devotees. Belur Math Kolkata is one of these. The goal of these monasteries was to train young men in their craft so that they may subsequently join the Ramakrishna Mission as "sannyasis." Swami Vivekananda spent his final years at Belur Math. 

In 1898, he consecrated the ground by worshipping the urn containing Sri Ramakrishna's sacred relics and carrying it to the place of devotion on his shoulders. "The brilliant light of universal harmony that will erupt from here will flood the entire planet," he said on this occasion, prophesying. These statements ring true in the Belur Math history.
 

Swami Vivekananda envisioned the temple's design and was entrusted with its construction. The temple's architecture and design "honor the plurality of Indian religions," according to its website. The monument resembles a temple, a church, and a mosque when viewed from various perspectives. The movement's belief in universal faith is shown in the blending of architectural styles from several religions.

The Buddhist styles of the Sanchi Stupa and the entrance to the Ajanta Caves have a strong effect on the temple's main entrance. The windows and balconies are influenced by Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, while the central dome is influenced by European architecture. In addition, the ground plan is shaped like a Christian cross.
 

• Apart from Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja, and Saraswati Puja, the Belur Math Kolkata also commemorates Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, and Swami Vivekananda's birthdays. Sri Krishna's, Buddha's, Jesus', and Chaitanya's birthdays are also gravely commemorated. 
• The Christmas Eve events, which begin with carol singing and Bible readings, are especially spectacular. 
• Medical services, education, rural upliftment, and other spiritual and cultural activities are also carried out by the Belur Math.
• Personal items of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda, a handful of his disciples, and direct disciples of the great philosopher are housed at the museum, which is a treasure trove for history aficionados.
• From January 1899 until the consecration of the new temple in 1935, this edifice was the original shrine where all followers used to pray. The original shrine which is worth seeing can be found on the northeast corner of the current Sri Ramakrishna temple.
   

• The Math's evening aarti, or prayers, is a joy to see. Because it is forbidden to walk outside the temple grounds during the sunset prayer, a bell is rung to signal visitors to come inside and join the aarti. The aarti begins at 5:30 p.m.
• All festivals are accorded equal importance and celebrated with the same vigor since they reflect one universal faith. During events at the Math, the atmosphere is quite spectacular.
• A visit to Belur Math is a must if you're in Kolkata during the holidays. At the Math, Christmas is celebrated with zeal, with Christmas carols performed and Bible reading sessions taking place.
• Beware of all the Belur Math Kolkata timings and rituals in advance.

Kolkata weather is best from October to March. The climate is cool and sustainable. It is henceforth recommended to visit in these months only. Summer and Monsoon are not good seasons to take a leisure trip here.

• Belur Math might be regarded as a location of history and national importance, according to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
• Inside the temple or on the campus, there are no inscriptions. However, on-campus, there are four temples -. Sri Ramakrishna Temple, Swami Vivekananda Temple, Swami Brahmananda Temple, and Holi Krishna Temple are all temples dedicated to Swami Vivekananda and Swami Brahmananda.
• Belur Math is actively involved in endeavors such as education, medical services, rural uplift, women's welfare, spiritual and cultural events, and work for the underprivileged.
