History
Dating back to 1864, this stadium has a long story. The name of this stadium is derived from Eden Parks, which is adjacent to the stadium and was established in 1841, primarily named after the Eden sisters of Lord Auckland. Initially, it was named 'Auckland Circus Gardens' but later it was changed to 'Eden Gardens' inspired by the Garden of Eden in the Bible. The first-ever Test match here was held in 1934, while the first One-Day International was held in 1987.
Architecture
The initial capacity of the stadium was kept to be 40,000. Major repair work was done over the years to increase the capacity to 1,00,000 to host the 1987 world cup. The geometrically accurate roof of the stadium was built in such a way that maximum coverage was provided with the least support. It was created over an irregular stadium in a very short time frame, supported by 42 columns making this stadium an engineering spectacle. The newly built Eden Garden matches the standards set for hosting first-class international cricket as per the ICC rules.
