History
Mother Teresa with her pupils started to form a small community to care for the ones who were abandoned, starving, and helpless in the year 1950. After getting permission from the Vatican, they started a church in Kolkata and begin helping the people who were abandoned by society because of their problems. The community formed by Mother Teresa initially had only 12 members. In 1965, Pope Paul VI, allowed Mother Teresa to expand her mission to serve the needy to several other countries. This greatly helped the congregation to grow all over the world.
In the existing list of congregation homes, the Contemplative branch of the Brothers was added in 1979 followed by a Priest Branch named Missionaries of Charity Fathers in the year 1984. Mother Teresa with the assistance of Father Joseph Langford founded both of these, thus combining the vocation with Ministerial Priesthood.
Venezuela became the first country outside India where the House began to serve, after which the congregation developed several houses in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the USA. By the year 1996, the congregations were running over 500 missions in over 100 nations. In 1990, Mother Teresa resigned, and sadly in 1997, she left her mortal body leaving the congregation in the trusted hands of her followers.
