History

The Moti Masjid Agra was built by Shah Jahan between 1648 and 1654 AD and is approximately 4.5 kilometers away from the Agra Cantonment Railway Station. Shah Jahan, who demolished several structures within the Agra Fort to add his marble, is largely responsible for the Agra Fort's present form.

One such construction was the Moti Masjid. The mosque is significantly later than all of the other contributions to the Agra Fort (these were commenced in 1627, and completed in 1638). The mosque was finished in 1653, five years after the Mughal capital was moved to Shahjahanabad. Shah Jahan was so taken with the mosque when he first saw it that upon finishing, he returned two years later to show it to two of his sons.

Architecture

The mosque complex is a walled enclosure to the north of the fort's courtyard, constructed on a high plinth. It faces the Yamuna river and is located on an east-west axis. The walls are made of red sandstone on the outside and marble on the interior. Each wall has a lofty entryway in the center, with the eastern one serving as the main entrance.

A nearly square courtyard lies within the enclosure walls, with arcades on the north, south, and eastern sides. The main prayer hall, with its multi-bayed aisle structure and twelve-sided piers, is located on the western perimeter. In the courtyard's center is an ablution pool. The prayer hall's interior isn't particularly ornate.
