History
Mughal emperor Shah Jahan during his rule felt the need for a masjid in the Agra Fort for the women of the Royal family to pray. So, during 1631-1640 he built the Nagina Masjid. This whole masjid is built with white marble only. One of the great things about this masjid is that it is located inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nagina Masjid Agra shares the Agra Fort with Diwan-i-khas, Diwan-i-aam, Jahangir Palace, Shah Jahani Mahal, Anguri Bagh, and Jahangir’s Hauz. All these places alongside Nagian Masjid share a common and glorious history. Mina bazaar, a luxurious market that used to function at the front side of the masjid from where women of the royal family used to shop from the balcony of the mosque.
Architecture
Nagina Masjid is a beautiful mosque of Mughal Architecture located in the glorious Agra Fort. This masjid is located near another beautiful masjid, the Moti Masjid. Only pure white marble is used in the construction. The design and architecture of this masjid are very simple, but it catches people’s attention. Arches with cusps are present at the entrance of the masjid.
Simple pillars that are constructed under the arches separate the masjid into three bays. Three domes of the masjid increase its beauty. All three domes have small points towers at the top. A half-moon design is also present at the top of the middle dome.
Activities
Namaz (Muslim prayer) can be offered at the mosque. People from other religions can also visit the mosque. The entry inside the mosque is completely free for all. Jahangir’s palace is also very close to the masjid. Diwan-i-aam and Diwan-i-Khas are just in touch with a masjid, these two places were used by the Mughal emperors to meet people according to their social status.
