Read More on Namdroling Monastery
History
The monastery was founded in 1963 by Drubwang Padma Norbu Rinpoche, the Palyul lineage's 11th thrones holder, following his 1959 departure from Tibet as the second seat of the Palyul Monastery, one of Tibet's six main Nyingmapa Mother monasteries prior to annexation.
Thegchog Namdrol Shedrub Dargyeling, or "Namdrolling or Namdroling" for short, is the full name of the monastery. The temple's first building was made of bamboo and covered an area of around 80 square feet. It is carved into the forest that Tibetan exiles were awarded by the Indian government. Initially, there were raging elephants and other tropical perils to contend with.
Architecture
Although the monastery appears little from the outside, it is enormous inside. Padmasambhava, Buddha, and Amitayus are three 40-foot-tall statues of Lord Buddha. Although the floor is composed of marble, it is usually carpeted. People can light incense sticks and sit on the carpet, contributing to the temple's spiritual atmosphere. Paintings illustrating stages in Buddha's life can be found on the walls. Some even have Tibetan gods and demons on exhibit. Sacred scriptures, horns, trumpets, incense sticks, bells, prayer beads, prayer wheels, prayer flags, drums, and other items can be found in the Namdroling Monastery.
Visitors to the monastery must remain silent in order to assist the monks who are meditating. It is also known as the Golden Temple because of the prominence of gold statues. The statue of Lord Buddha stands 60 feet tall, while those of Guru Padmasambhava and Amitayur at 58 feet tall. Near the entrance, there are placards stating that there are sacred scriptures in the shape of statues, as well as little clay tupas, which are emblems of the Buddhas' body, mind, and speech. Their adherents believe that by worshipping these symbols and making offerings, one's faith will be restored and that this will aid in the attainment of peace, compassion, and wisdom.
