History

The mesmerizing Rajmachi Fortress was brought to existence by the Satvahanas. When the fort was under the ruler of Bijapur it was invaded and captured by the fierce Maratha ruler named Shivaji Maharaja in the year 1657. For a long time, the fort was under the rule of the Mughals until the Marathas regained their control over the paradise on earth. In 1818 the Marathas witnessed a downfall, the Britishers grabbed the opportunity and took ownership of the fort.

The Rajmachi Fort is unique in itself as stretches over two hills and is a twin fortress. This fort acted as a defense fort and provided security to the ancient trade routes. The Buddhist caves that are located on the western side of the Rajmachi Fort are said to be built in 200 BC. The presence of these caves adds to the fact that the Fort held significant importance in the history of Maharashtra.

Architecture

The Rajmachi Fort architecture is well planned and thoughtfully built. It stretches over two hills which are known as the Shrivardhan hills and the Manaranjan hills. The fort was used as armor, for defense purposes and was built in a very traditional way. It resembles the forts that were built around Maharashtra back then. This Rajmachi fort is an architectural marvel constructed using stone. One can find few structures in and around the fort that could not stand the test of time and have surrendered themselves to the process of degradation.

Many man-made lakes and ponds have been added to the route of the trek. These man-made water bodies are helpful as they store freshwater that can be used during the summer season.
