Read More on St. Mary's Church
History
As previously stated, St. Mary's Church was built on July 3, 1825. Because St. Mary's Church is the oldest church in India's mid-western region, it is recognized as the Deccan's mother church. The church was once a part of the Church of England, but it eventually became an independent province of the Anglican Communion. There are additional tributes to several British servicemen who died while fighting for their nation in the chapel.
Architecture
With a tower on the west end, a winding staircase on the south that leads to the gallery, a vestry (a room or structure connected to a church, used as an office and for changing into ceremonial vestments), and a lamp room on the ground floor, St. Mary's Church is an architectural masterpiece. The church's interior can accommodate up to 1,000 people. The eight circular pillars—four on each side of the nave (the church's central section)—are notable for the expert chuna (slaked lime) plastering that covers them, giving them a marble-like appearance.
Colonel Nasmyth, a Trigonometrical Survey superintendent, designed the stained glass window above the communion table. R.G. Oxenham, Director of Public Construction, designed the windows. Colonel William Morris, one of the survivors of the Battle of Balaclava, fought on October 25, 1854, during the Crimean War, is commemorated in the inside of the chapel with a commemorative inscription.
