History
The glorious history of this fort dates back to the early 15th century. A large group of refugees has fled from Conjeevaran and camped here at the fort. Conjeevaran is now famously known as Kanchi. Rana Baire Gowda who was the chief of the tribe dreamed of a permanent settlement for his people near somewhere close to the foothills of Ramaswamy betta, it was the same palace they were camping.
Later on, it was his son, Malla Baire Gowda who found this beautiful place-Devanahalli during the rule of the Great Vijayanagar empire. Initially, Devanahalli was a part of Gangawadi, which later fall under the rule of various dynasties including Nolamba, Pallavas, Cholas, Rashstrakutas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara empire.
In the year 1501 AD, Malle Baire was able to get permission from the kind of Devanadoddi (the official name of Devanahalli) and he began constructing a fort for his family and people. The Devanahalli Fort Bangalore was just a mud structure in the very beginning. The fort was renovated several times until it finally came under the rule of Wodeyars of Mysore. After the Marathas, who had successfully conquested the fort many times, the fort came to Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.
Architecture
Devanahalli Fort Bangalore is a brilliant example of 15th-century architectural advancement. The fortification consists of 12 semi-circular bastions, each of these has a gun-point view and a spacious battlement way inside the fort walls. The small entrances of the fort are decorated with cut-plasterwork. The chief residence of Tipu Sultan has a stone tabloid that reads ‘Tipu’s Birth Place’. Khas Bagh is the area surrounding the memorial that has various plantations.
