History


The name Har Ki Pauri translates to  Lord Shiva’s steps, and it is believed that both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu visited this ghat during the olden ages. It is said that King Vikramaditya built the ghat in the 1st century BC in the memory of his brother, Bharthari who had come to meditate here on the bank of the Ganges

The area where Ganga Aarti takes place within the Ghat is considered to be the spot where the drops of Amrit fell over from the sky while being carried by the celestial bird, Garuda in a pitcher after the Samudra Manthan. The ghats have gone through major extensions over the years as the crowds increased in subsequent Kumbh Melas.

  • Attend the Ganga Aarti - The evening aarti is conducted during the sunset. It is one of the most popular rituals of the town which is performed by chanting bhajans in praise of the lord, beating electrifying drums and rhythmic bells.

  • Make sure to be careful during the dip, near the steps as they can be quite slippery due to the water dripping off.

Getting In haridwar

BY AIR

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Aiport, Dehradun. The airport has good flight connectivity from major cities. The airport is located just 39.9 km from Ghat. It takes about 47 minutes to drive from the airport to the Ghat. One can hire a cab, or take a bus to reach the Ghat from the airport.

BY ROAD

Haridwar is very well connected to other nearby cities by road. The road to the palace has frequent buses that are travelling to and from neighboring cities and other towns. The Bus stand near Devipura is located just 2.8 km away from Ghat. One can choose to hire a cab or an auto-rickshaw to reach the Ghat.

BY RAIL

The Haridwar railway station is located just 1.9 km away from Ghat. Regular trains are coming from neighborhoods and other far places in the country. The road between the railway station and the ghat is regularly frequented by the local buses and alternatively, visitors can even hire a cab to reach Ghat.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
