History
The name Har Ki Pauri translates to Lord Shiva’s steps, and it is believed that both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu visited this ghat during the olden ages. It is said that King Vikramaditya built the ghat in the 1st century BC in the memory of his brother, Bharthari who had come to meditate here on the bank of the Ganges
The area where Ganga Aarti takes place within the Ghat is considered to be the spot where the drops of Amrit fell over from the sky while being carried by the celestial bird, Garuda in a pitcher after the Samudra Manthan. The ghats have gone through major extensions over the years as the crowds increased in subsequent Kumbh Melas.

- Attend the Ganga Aarti - The evening aarti is conducted during the sunset. It is one of the most popular rituals of the town which is performed by chanting bhajans in praise of the lord, beating electrifying drums and rhythmic bells.

- Visit in the early hours of dawn, to dip into the water without any disturbance.
- Do not carry any valuables with you while you are going to attend the aarti, as it is crowded and there can be chances of you losing them.
- Make sure to be careful during the dip, near the steps as they can be quite slippery due to the water dripping off.
Best time to visit
Haridwar is an all-around year destination. The weather here remains moderate, but the best months are between November and March when the temperature is cool and pleasant. Also, the sunrise from the Ghat is mesmerizing, so ensure you visit the Ghat to watch the epic sunrise.
