History
To preserve and showcase the Rajasthani art and heritage, an international multi-art and culture center was constructed in Jaipur, named Jawahar Kala Kendra ( JKK ). The architect that designed this unique structure was Charle Correa. The building was finally ready for use in the year 1992. The Nine-planet concept of Indian astronomy that also resembles the square-shaped plan of Jaipur was the main concept behind the unique design of the art center.
Various scholars, artisans, and artists from all around the world are facilitated by the JKK to interact with the visitors through its various events. The art center is very close to completing its 3-decade long journey and throughout these years Jawahar Kala Kendra Jaipur has successfully organized some of the best cultural festivals and events.
Architecture
The architect of this great structural marvel was repute-late Charles Correa. He designed the complex of Jawahar Kala Kendra Jaipur on the theme of the Nine-planets ( Nav Grah ) principle of Indian astronomy. The design of the Jawahar Kala Kendra architecture resembles the square-grid plan of the walled city of Jaipur.
The main building of the art center houses an open-air theatre, coffee shop, dormitories, auditoriums, and six exhibition galleries. Every section of the building showcase the qualities of the respective planet, for instance, the library is located in the Jupiter section. Jupiter is known for knowledge and wisdom.
Activities
The library of the Jawahar Kala Kendra Jaipur has a huge collection of books on various genres. The three performing areas or auditoriums of the art center that must be visited are Madhyavarti, Rangayan, and Black Box Krishnan. Madhyavarti is a special one because it is an open theatre with a traditional Rajasthani staircase. Three art galleries are also present in the art center. Chaturdik, Parijat I, and Parijat II are art galleries that allow various artists to exhibit their works.
Many international artists have successfully exhibited their works. In the month of October-November, a mega cultural festival named ‘Lok Rang’ or say ‘National Folk Festival’ is organized, in which National Handicraft Fair and National Dance Festival are also organized. Jawahar Kala Kendra plans various other events and activities throughout the year.
