History
The Fort was built under the supervision of the founder of Jaipur himself. The fort was constructed on the Aravalli Range by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in the year 1734. It was used as a summer retreat fort and was never attacked by enemies. It did stand witness to the treaty signed with the Maratha forces in the 18th century.
In 1857 the fort provided shelter to several Europeans during the Sepoy Mutiny. In the year 1868, the Nahargarh fort Jaipur was renovated and Raja Sawai Ram Singh built a few more palaces within the fort. The Nahargarh Fort timings are from 10:00 A.M- 5:30 P.M. daily and it is best to reach early if you want to explore the whole Fort.
Architecture
The fort is designed along the lines of very medieval architecture. The mesmerizing Indo-European architecture is what brings together the structure of the fort. You enter through the Tadigate, there is a temple near the gate dedicated to all the Kings who have ruled Jaipur. Along with this temple, there is one more temple that is dedicated to Prince Nahar Singh Bhomia. The Diwan-i-aam is a structure standing in an open area, it is where the King met his loyal subjects.
The Madhavendra Bhawan is a double-storied building built by Sawai Madho Singh Ji. It has the rooms for 12 queens of the King and the suite of the King is here too. The 9 quarters are well equipped with a bedroom, toilets, a kitchen, and stores. The rooms of the queens were built in a very unique yet interesting way. These rooms gave the King full privacy, he could move around freely from the room of one queen to that of others without being noticed by anyone. The fort has many fresco paintings and detailed minakari work is also showcased along the corridors and in the rooms.
