History

Mudalier and his family stayed in the mansion for a long time, according to the NGMA's archivists. Due to financial difficulties, the property was auctioned and purchased by the City Improvement Trust, which is now the BDA, before being handed to the Housing Board in the 1960s. The mansion was subleased to the Ministry of Culture by the Ministry of Kannada and Culture in 2000. It was chosen as the site for the NGMA's southern center.

Restoration began in 2003, and the museum reopened on February 18, 2009, under the direction of curator Sobha Nambisan. In 2006, the gallery underwent renovations in preparation for its reopening as NGMA's third location. This comes after a long period of development and debate. Valium Manickavelu Mudaliar the, a Yuvaraja of Mysore, previously owned the huge, 100-year-old Manikyavelu Mansion.

Mudalier married into aristocracy rather than being born into it. After leasing multiple manganese and chrome mines, he became a prosperous company entrepreneur. The building was purchased by Mudalier early in his career, according to documentation in the NGMA archives.

Architecture

The charming heritage structure was turned from a dwelling to an Art Gallery, with a display space of 1551 square meters, and a new gallery block with a display space of 1260 square meters was added to the 3.5-acre property.

The additional block's architecture was created in such a way that it blends in with the Manikyavelu Mansion's style and mood while also meeting the needs of a modern museum. Tourists are always excited to see the National Gallery of Modern Art Bangalore Architecture.
