History
The Mangalore church of Our Lady of Rosary was once the church of an old Portuguese factory. It was built in 1568 by the Portuguese. According to oral tradition, the image of the Virgin Mary on the high altar was discovered by fishermen at sea when it became entangled in their net. It was later transported and put at the church. The Bamonn caste worshipped the picture of Our Lady of the Rosary on the high altar, and the church was their major place of worship. When Italian traveler Pietro Della Valle visited Mangalore in 1623, he mentioned it.
Tipu Sultan, the king of Mysore, desecrated and demolished the church in 1784. The church was later rebuilt, beginning in 1813. The previous cathedral was dismantled in 1910, and the current church was built in its place. Our Lady of Rosary Church is the only church in the Mangalore Diocese with a dome atop the vast sanctuary. The cross on the cathedral's top was lit brightly to serve as a signal for seafarers, every night. At the church's entrance is the Portuguese King's royal stone symbol, which commemorates their landing in Mangalore.
Architecture
Divo of Bombay, a Jesuit brother, was the designer of the new cathedral. With 48 major arches, 12 central arches, and 50 sub-arches, the construction is made up of a succession of matching arches. Around 45 tiny arches can be found on the verandah's periphery.
The dome is a duplicate of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, with hefty metal ribs, modest metal reinforcements, and water-proofed red brick and mortar utilizing indigenous techniques. Ships approaching Mangalore port used to be able to view the cathedral's dome, which was a stunning sight.
