History

St. Mary's Basilica Bangalore history is a long history dating back to the 17th century. Originally, this church was a thatched house known as the Chapel of Kanikkai Madha. It was constructed by a group of Tamil Nadu Christians. They discovered that the land was fertile and excellent for sowing white rice, so they relocated there. They erected the chapel to practice their religion.

The chapel was eventually transformed into a cross-shaped church with aisles and halls. Due to communal conflicts in the neighborhood, this church was demolished in 1832. The construction of the current church began in 1875.

As the church's historical significance, the British government donated for its upkeep until 1948. As the number of devotees visiting the shrine increased, the area was expanded to provide enough space to sit and stand. The church was designated a Basilica in 2007.
