History
St. Mary's Basilica Bangalore history is a long history dating back to the 17th century. Originally, this church was a thatched house known as the Chapel of Kanikkai Madha. It was constructed by a group of Tamil Nadu Christians. They discovered that the land was fertile and excellent for sowing white rice, so they relocated there. They erected the chapel to practice their religion.
The chapel was eventually transformed into a cross-shaped church with aisles and halls. Due to communal conflicts in the neighborhood, this church was demolished in 1832. The construction of the current church began in 1875.
As the church's historical significance, the British government donated for its upkeep until 1948. As the number of devotees visiting the shrine increased, the area was expanded to provide enough space to sit and stand. The church was designated a Basilica in 2007.
Architecture
St. Mary's Basilica has a Gothic architecture with stained windows, ornamental decorations, and arches. Multiple columns and lofty spires can be seen from afar.
The Church's magnificent arches are supported by several columns with exquisite Corinthian capitals. During World War II, the stained glass windows were removed and restored in 1947. It has a length of 172 feet and a width of 50 feet. The Church's exterior is dominated by a 160-foot tall intimidating and majestic tower. In an elegant shrine just outside the Church structure, a lovely statue of Mother Mary cradling Child Jesus in her arms stands 6 feet tall.

The birth of Lady Mary is commemorated with a large feast that includes feeding the poor and needy, doing social services for the destitute, and hosting the Traditional Flag. Apart from the church's exquisite architecture, the St. Mary's feast, which takes place every year for ten days in September, attracts a great number of tourists to the Basilica. Novena is held for the first nine days, then on the tenth day, which is September 8th is Mother Mary's birthday.
