Amritsar Overview

Amritsar is a city of Punjab. The name of the city is derived from the name of the poolarund the Golden Temple that means the ‘holy pool of nectar’. The city is considered as the spiritual centre of Sikh religion. The beautiful city with glorious history is flourished with significant religious centre, magnificent past, splendid present and a hopeful future. The city also houses the most prestigious and sacred shrine of Sikhs that is Golden Temple, also known as Harmindir Sahib. It is believed that Goddess Sita has spent some time of her life here at sage Valmiki’s ashram and given birth to Lord Ram’s twins Luv and Kush. During British era the city had witnessed the brutal massacre of Jaliawala Bagh which left 329 people dead and more than 1200 people injured.

History of Amritsar

Amritsar was established in 16th century by 4th Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das. During Mughal era the city was known as Ramdaspur was controlled by Guru Hargobind. Mughal interfere in the lives of locals as a result of which Guru left the city after which city faced downfall and came closer to the lost point. By the time British era started, the city started known as the lands of Sikhs. During the British reign when all country was ruled by colonists, Amritsar has its own truculence.

It was British time when the city faces it horrific incident of Jaliawala Bagh in 1919 when thousand were injured and hundreds had lost their lives. Till date, the day is reminded as the black day in history of Amritsar and India.
