History, Culture, and Traditions of Coorg:

Coorg is also known as Kodagu, is a district in the Karnataka state of India. Before 1956, Coorg was a separate state and was merged with the Mysore State, and now it is known as Karnataka. Coorg covers a 4,102 square kilometers area and is one of the less populated places in Karnataka.

The Kodavas, a warrior community, were the earliest inhabitants in Kodagu. The first mention of Coorg date back to the Sangam period (300 BCE - 300 CE). The Keladi Nayakas ruled Coorg between 1600 and 1834, and after that, the British ruled Kodagu from 1834. Coorg was ruled by many rulers of South India. The Changalvas, Cholas, Gangas, Hoysalas, Kadambas, and Pandyas are among the rulers that ruled Coorg.

People of Coorg follow the culture, traditions, beliefs, and customs of the Kodava people. People here speak Kodava or Coorg language, which is influenced by Tulu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada languages. Pork is the staple meat of any traditional function in Coorg prepared in vinegar and fruits.

Getting In Coorg


At 135 km away from Coorg, Mangalore airport is the nearest airport. One can easily reach Coorg from Bangalore also.
