History, Culture and Traditions of Haridwar

Haridwar is located in the Uttarakhand state of India and is home to around 228,832 people. Also known as Mayapuri, Kapila, and Gangadwar, the first mention of this city dates back to ancient times. According to Puranic legend, the drop of Amrita (elixir of immortality) was fallen from the Kumbha (a pitcher) while it was being carried by the celestial bird Garuda.

In Sanskrit, Hari means Vishnu (Indian god), and Dwar means "Gateway", so the meaning of Haridwar means "The Gateway to Lord Vishnu". Also, Hari means "Shiva", so the city name also means "the Gateway to Loard Shiva".

The city name was also mentioned as "Gangadwar" in the Mahabharat. Being home to Panch Trith, Ganga, and gateway to Char Dham, Haridwar is one of the important cities for Hindus.
