Khajuraho Tourism

This small city of India named Khajuraho is well known for its explicit erotic sculptures that are carved on the ancient pillars of the temples. These stone carvings are recognized worldwide as some of the most awesome temple art in the world. Especially Jain and Hindu pilgrims often visit this city due to the ancient importance these temples hold. Khajuraho temples are dated back to the 10th century and are now considered to be UNESCO world heritage sites. This small city is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the metro cities and gives travelers an insight into the rural life of India. If you are a tourist then two days stay will be fine but if you are a traveler and want to explore further, then a week will be enough. This city boasts its rich culture, heritage, and glorious past. Initially, there were 85 ancient temples in this city but only some could survive the wrath of mother nature. These temples were constructed during the Chandela Empire and only 22 structures stand tall now. Many expressions and structures carved on the temple walls show the images of the divine Shiva and Shakti.

This Khajuraho travel guide on Khajuraho tourism will help you explore the city easily and inform you about the places to visit in Khajuraho, Khajuraho travel places, Khajuraho tourist places, the history and culture of Khajuraho, and the best time to visit Khajuraho.

History, Culture, and Traditions of Khajuraho:

The small town that was brought to life in the 10th century holds a lot of historical value. You can still find tribes here, although they are seeing their end and trying to survive somehow. The people of Khajuraho are trying to keep their art, craft, and traditions alive. Khajuraho signifies beauty and diversity. The ruler of the Chandela Dynasty started building these structures immediately after the rise of their power. Most temples that still stand here were built by Yashovarman and Dhang, the Hindu Kings.

While on a trip to Khajuraho do attend the festival of Classical Dances. This festival is held every year during February and March. Famous dancers of India perform the classical dance styles they are experts in. It is a week-long festival in which dance styles like Manipuri, Odissi, Bharat Natyam, Kathakali, and Kathak are performed. This folk dance show is held in the Kandariya Art and Cultural Centre.

Khajuraho is a tourist destination and draws a lot of tourists from all around the world. Shopping here can be fun if you know what to buy and where to buy it. Here you will come across many handicraft stores from where you can buy decoratives or sculptures of stone, brass, and iron. If you happen to be here on a Tuesday you can even visit the weekly Tuesday market held at Rajinagar.

The Cuisine of Khajuraho:

While at Khajuraho remember to help locals generate as much income as possible. Buy from local food stalls and vendors because people living in this city have restricted sources to generate income. Try the Raj cafe as it offers an extensive multi-cuisine menu and the food here is delicious. The rooftop view is picturesque and the seating area is also very cozy. Agrasen is one of the well-known rooftop restaurants here because it serves quality food, be it pizzas, a variety of pasta, or Indian food. Some more famous restaurants are Mediterraneo, Blue Sky Restaurant, lassi corner (for refreshing lassi), and Bella Italia.
