Udaipur Overview

Udaipur is a city of royal state of Rajasthan. It is also known as the city of lakes. Nestled amidst the ranges of Aravallis, the colorful city is located in the western part of Rajasthan. Udaipur is also a municipal council of the Udaipur district. The beauty of the city is lies in the tranquility of the lake. This beautiful city is often called as the city of Dawn. History of Udaipur

The previous kingdom of Mewar, Udaipur is one of the culturally rich Cities in India. The city possesses the great pride and glorious history. In the year 1958, Mughal emperor Akbar the Great overtook Chittorgarh and Rajput King Udai Sing was forced to flee from there. After leaving Chittorgarh, Udai Singh established the city of Udaipur. Until the British reign started in the country, Udaipur served as the capital of the Mewar clan. In 1818 when British gradually started spreading their wings throughout the country, the city of Udaipur then declared as the princely state.

In 1947, when India gained Independence Mewar kingdom was integrated into the state of Rajasthan. Being situated around the artificial lakes the city is called as the City of Lakes. Udaipur is ornamented with other names such as the City of Palaces and Venice of the East perfectly justifying its scenic beauty and majestic historical background.

Culture – Traditions and Cuisine of Udaipur

The Venice of the East is famous for its glorious history. Culturally rich this city is highly influential by the Rajasthani Culture. People of the city are welcoming, friendly open minded. The city shows the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary style. Udaipur is famous for its Bhil tribe which ornament themselves with heavy silver jewelry. Being highly influenced by Jainism and Vaishnavism the cuisine if purely vegetarian. Female wears Ghaghra and Choli for women and men wears Kurta and Dhoti which is the traditional attire of the locals. The colors are bright and eye catching.

Been the Mewar kingdom once, the people mostly speaks Mewari language. With the changing time, Hindi and English language is also common in youth these days. Main religion is Jainism with it other religions like Sikhism, Christianity and Hinduism are also prevailing majorly.

Folk dance is most famous and interesting. These folk dances are performing mostly during some special occasions such as festivals or marriages etc. Ghoomar, kalbeliya, Chari, Bhavai etc are some of the folk dance form.

Cuisine of Udaipur

The food of the Udaipur mostly involves vegetables due to the influence of Jainism and Vaishnavism. These vegetables are spices up which gives its true spicy Rajasthani taste. Cuisine made up of Dal, lentils, Yogurt, dry mango, sangria beans and etc. Ghee is the staple ingredient of the cuisine which gives food a pure Rajasthani touch. Udaipur being the part of Rajasthan accomplishes its food list with traditional Rajasthani food that is Dal Baati Churma which is the famous throughout the world.
