History
The Ajaygarh fort was established during the 2nd -3rd century and served from the Gupta Dynasty to the Chandelas until it was invaded by the Britishers. The fort remained unconquered despite witnessing many battles hence, the name Ajaygarh- meaning the victory domicile. Ajaygarh Fort faced its first Muslim invasion under Sultan Iltutmish of the Delhi Sultanate though prior to this attack, Sultan Qutubuddin Aibak’s army passed in the vicinity but failed to localize the fort due to its hidden strategic location. The fort remained independent until it came under the rule of Emperor Akbar. Later Ajaygarh was captured by the British and it became a princely state in the Bundelkhand Agency of the Central India Agency.
Architecture
Ajaygarh fort is noted for its historical past and architectural beauty fabricated by the Chandelas. Ajaigarh Fort originally had five gates, but only two gates survived the test of time. There are two temples and two rock-cut tanks present in the fort which was the only source of drinking water for the fort residents. The renowned Chandela architecture is evident inside the fortress. The two glorious standing doors are a fine example of architecture. Inscriptions in some native languages can also be seen on the walls of the fort. Deities, devotees, apsaras, and holy animals are a few figures that are carved on the hard sedimentary rocks.
