History


The Akhnoor Fort’s history is very bulky and worth knowing. The ASI stated that the fort was built on the ruins of Manda town. This is the site where the Indus Valley civilization and the Khushana dynasty remains were found. Since then the fort has been protected by ASI. 
The Akhnoor Fort Jammu was constructed during the 19th century. A well-known historian had clearly stated that according to his observation that Akhnoor was the largest state of Jammu in the 19th century. The construction of the fort was initiated by Mian Tej Singh in 1762 AD. It was later completed by Raja Alum Singh his successor in the year 1802. It does not end here, some believe that this site is the place where Pandavas once stayed. Akhnoor is assumed to be the Virat Nagri mentioned in Mahabharat. Pandavas spent the last year of their exile in the caves here.

Architecture


The Akhnoor Fort Jammu is painted pink and has high walls with defenses at regular intervals. The huge fort has two-storied watchtowers at each corner. The fort has two sections which are segregated via a huge wall. The courtyard as stated earlier has walls decorated with mural paintings. The arches decorate the courtyard walls too. The ancient Pandava Caves can be found hidden behind the huge walls, all you have to do is look for an inscription on the outer wall.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
