History
Nikumbh Rajputs were the initial occupants of the Bala Quila. Later it was won over by Khanzada Alawal Khan whose son Hasan Khan Mewati reconstructed it. In the subsequent centuries, the fort was passed on from the Mughals to the Marathas, Jats, and Rajputs. The fort was used by Mughals as the base for attacking Ranthambore even before they started ruling. Mughal emperors Babur and Akbar stayed for a night at this Quila. Prince Salim, the son of Mughal emperor Akbar was exiled for three years in this fort as the outcome of banishment by Emperor Akbar.
Architecture
The vast structure of Bala Quila stretches over an area of 5 kilometers. It can be entered through 6 gates. The Bala Quila was fabricated in the Indo-Islamic architectural style. The Fort has 446 openings for Musketry which are surrounded by 8 citadels, 15 large and 51 small towers and the walls of the fort are beautifully carved. The fort's significant structures include Jai Mahal, Nikumbh Mahal, Salim Sagar Pond, Suraj Kund, and temples such as Sita Ram temple, Top Wale Hanuman Ji Temple, and Chakradhari Hanuman temple, all of which exhibit the historical grandeur of the past.

- There are 8 citadels within the Bala Quila, Alwar and it can go unnoticed unless visitors and tourists specifically keep an eye out for them. While touring the Bala Quila, it is highly recommended to visit all of the 8 citadels within the fort.
- Wear comfortable footwear as one can expect a mediocre amount of climbing and trekking to be done within the fort.
- Since photography is allowed, do remember to take plenty of photos amidst these absolutely beautiful sights and architecture masterpieces.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit The Bala Quila is between October to February. It is advisable to visit the Bala Quila, Alwar during the winters as the summers tend to get very hot and humid with temperatures going up to 42° Celsius during May. This could be quite uncomfortable and irritating for visitors that are not used to the hot weather in comparison to the residents of the locality.
