History
The Yadava rulers of the region built Chandragiri Fort in the 11th century. It was later included in the thriving Vijayanagara empire in the region, and it was here that the popular future Vijayanagara King Sri Krishna Devaraya was nurtured. Chandragiri fort was made the capital of his realm after he became king, and it stayed so for several years.
The fort was conquered years later, in 1460 A.D. (by Odra Gajapati Kapilendra Dev). The fort was incorporated into the popular Golkonda realm in the mid-17th century and afterwards came under the administration of the Kingdom of Mysore. The fort was extremely important in the 17th century. It was here when the contract ceding lands to the British for Fort St. George (a monument built by British traders who travelled to India) was originally signed.
The fort is currently under the control of the Andhra Pradesh government.
