One of the oldest chapels in Goa and also the most popular one is the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. The Church leaves you mesmerized at the very first sight. The church is located in Panjim, on a hillock. This is the church that houses the second largest church bells in Goa. 

The facade of this church is painted sparkling white, and the church still looks so young. It’s as if the church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception aged like fine wine. The ancient church was originally built in 1541 but was renovated in the 1600s. The double flight of stairs leads to the church and the sunset view from here is breathtakingly beautiful. The church lights up at night making it a soothing site. 

During the festival of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Goa which is held on 8th December, people from around the world come to Goa just to be a part of it. A larger-than-life celebration takes place. A grand fair is held, the church is decorated with flowers and lights. The church is open from Monday to Sunday. The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception timings is from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM - 7:30 PM.

History


The church was built in the year 1541 keeping in mind the needs of the Portuguese sailors. This structure was built when the area was occupied by the Portuguese and a less populated Portuguese village was nearby. In 1600 the chapel became Parish and this old church was renovated. The structure we see today was originally built in 1609. 

The stairs and the very famous bell were later added to the church premise. The bell belonged to the ruins of the Church of Our Lady of Grace, later it was placed at this church. The largest bell of this kind resides in the Se Cathedral followed by the second largest bell that is displayed for the visitors at the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Goa.

Architecture


The Portuguese style of architecture makes the church stand out. The church is painted with shiny white color and has a few streaks of blue here and there. The white represents Virgin Mary. The bell tower here is a highlight because it is the Augustinian bell. The towers are referred to as the crown of Panjim. 

Mother Mary stands at the main altar. The interior is elegant and colorful. There are two more alters here, one dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and the other is dedicated to Jesus’ Crucifixion. Many movies have been shot here and this church witnesses tourists throughout the year.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
