History
The magnificent Dulhadev Temple Khajuraho is a part of the group of 22 temples to the Hindu god Shiva, which are among the 87 temples that were built by the great Chandela rulers of Central India. The peak time of building these temples was from 950 AD -1050 AD in the small village of Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. The temples in Khajurao belong to the traditional religions of Jainism and Hinduism. These groups of temples are identified under three zones - the eastern zone, the western zone, and the southern zone. The famous Moroccan traveler Ibn Batuta had attested to the existence of these historical temples even in the year 1335.
These temples in Khajuraho were inscribed under the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in 1986, for their artistic creation and for the culture of the Chandellas that was popular in India, till the invasions of Muslims in 1202. Some historians also say that Madanaverman (1128–1165) of the Chandela dynasty has built this temple during his rule.
Architecture
Being a Nirandhara temple it faces east. The maha mandapa of the temple is quite huge and octagonal in shape. The temple layout does not have a circumambulation passage which is most likely due to the fact that it was one of the last temples built in the late 12th century during the rule of Chandelas when the peak period of temple construction had already passed.
The Dulhadev Temple Khajuraho pinnacle (shikhara) consists of three rows of minor shikharas. Nagara is the architectural style of the temple, which represents Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva.
