Read More on Fort Khejarla
History
To honor the heroic services provided by Maharaja Gopal Das Ji in the war against the Mughal Empire, the Maharaja of Jodhpur constructed the Khejarla Fort in 1611 AD. The fort derives its name Khejarla from a Khejdi tree present in the village; it seems to have protected the fort when it was under attack from Mughal forces who were using heavy ammunition. The fort was attacked thrice by the Mughal Army, and the Rajputs built it back up again each time, portraying their spirit of resilience.
During that time, Khejarla was a prosperous center of Rajput royalty that included courts, hundreds of servants, several camels, and horses for transportation, as well as a large area of fertile agricultural land. Officials at this court were highly regarded for the honor, nobility, and bravery they exhibited during the tough times of war.
The current Maharaja of the fort Thakur Dileep Singh resides in a private part of the fort alongside the royal family descendants from Jaisalmer.
Architecture
The Khejarla Fort Jodhpur consists of four separate sections that have been now creatively renovated as recreational spaces for the heritage hotel. At the entrance, there is an arched gateway that was mainly used as a public space in those times for court ceremonies.
Zenana Mahal is the place where the royal Rajput ladies used to stay. As per Rajput tradition, royal men and women have to reside separately. The palace has a lounge and two floors of suites. Mardana Mahal is for the male members of the royal house.
