Read More on Fort Tiracol
History
Raja Khem Sawant, Maharaja of Sawantwadi, built the fort in the 17th century because the mound gave a magnificent view of the Arabian Sea. After multiple conflicts between Sawantwadi's men and the Portuguese Army, the fort was lost to the Portuguese in 1746, and the fort was renamed 'Holy Trinity Fortress of Tiracol.' During this time, the Holy Trinity church was also constructed.
The fort remained under Portuguese authority until 1961 when the Portuguese were forced to leave Indian territory. The fort's integrity had been weakened due to successive wars. The fort was turned into the heritage hotel we know today after efforts to develop it into a weekend tourist destination began in 1976.
Architecture
Standing at the fort, one may appreciate the grandeur of the Arabian Sea. The fort was designed in an Indian style. Although the majority of the fort has deteriorated over time, the grandeur of the fort has been preserved because the Portuguese repaired it later in history.
The British style of architecture was used to design the Holy Trinity church within the fort. In today's world, the state government has turned the fort into a hotel. The fort was constructed of stone and mud with stones in some areas before its renovation into a hotel. The fort's structures are two-storied.
