The elaborate carvings on the Jaswant Thada make it an architectural marvel. It was created in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, and is regarded as one of the most beautiful white marble cenotaphs in the world. The Taj Mahal of Marwar is the name given to this white marble beauty of Rajasthan. The magnificent structure is a wonderful example of Rajputana architecture. Its immaculate design and architecture are evocative of the bygone age’s superb craftsmanship.

The marble-sheeted Jodhpur’s Jaswant Thada is set among gorgeous multi-tiered gardens and a tranquil lake. There are three other cenotaphs here, as well as a cremation area allocated exclusively for the Royal Family. The marble sheets are extremely thin and finely cut, making them an excellent example of skilled marble sculpture. The monument has a temple-like look with many domes and shikharas.

Some elements of the ancient monument resemble the Taj Mahal, uncannily. As a result, it is also known as the Taj Mahal of Marwar. The cenotaph also contains lattice screens, which add to the architectural splendor. There's also a peacock memorial, which is claimed to have flown into a funeral pyre as the rites were taking place.

• Because the two monuments are so nearby, combine your visit to Mehrangarh Fort and Jaswant Thada.

The tiny lake that runs alongside Jaswant Thada was once used for performing rites for the dead, but now it's home to a few ducks.
