History
The Chandela dynasty built a large number of temples between 950 and 1050 CE in Khajuraho, which was then the capital of the Chandela empire. The Chandelas, who were instrumental in the construction of these temples, reached the pinnacle of their power around 1030 and ruled as the most powerful rulers from the 9th to 12th centuries. According to historical data, there were approximately 85 temples in the 12th century, with only about 20 temples remaining now. Khandarya Mahadeva is the largest of the extant Shiva temples. Those of all surviving temples, as well as the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, were added to the UNESCO list of world-historic sites in 1997.
Architecture
The Kandariya Mahadev temple architecture is worth observing, it covers a total area of 6,500 square feet and stands at a height of approximately 117 feet above ground level. All of the temples, including the Kandariya Mahadev, face east, with Chaturbhuja being the exception. The Kandariya Mahadev temples are erected on an adhishsthana, or raised platform, that may be approached through vertical steps. The temple's several chambers are connected to one another in a well-organized manner. At the entryway is the Ardhamandapa, a rectangular hall that leads to the Mandapa, a centre pillared hall that leads to the Garbhagrha, the darkest sanctuary. The main spire rises over the Garbhagrha.
Inside the shrine is a Linga, or devotional marble representation of Lord Shiva. Throughout the edifice, the decorative creative patterns and architecture have been displayed in a Hindu iconographic pattern. The four primary pursuits of life, Moksha, Karma, Dharma, and Artha, are depicted on both the exterior and inside of the temple walls, pillars, and ceilings.
