Read More on Mansar Lake
History
Lake Mansar has a long history dating back to Mahabharat. The Pandavas staged the Ashwamedh Yagna to demonstrate their prowess after the epic battle of Kurukshetra. The former lord of the area, Babruvahan, captured the horse, which was the Yagna's symbol of authority. He murdered Arjun as well as captured the horse, and proudly displayed his victim's head to Ulpi, his mother. She informed Babruvahan that he had slain his father by accident.
A sacred mani (diamond) from Sheshnag (who lived in Patal Lok) was required to resuscitate Arjuna. As a result, Babar carved a surang (tunnel) into the ground with his arrow to create a way to Patal Lok. Surinsar Lake was named after the spring of water that erupted from this tunnel. Babruvahan appeared on the earth with the mani and a spring of water, producing the Mansar Lake, after defeating Sheshnag with another arrow.
