About Mansar Lake Jammu

Lake Mansar, together with its twin lake Surinsar, is a famous picnic place and pilgrimage destination, surrounded by deep woodland, tiny parks, a temple, and low-lying hills. It is 62 kilometers from Jammu and measures over a mile in length and half a mile in width. It shares the mythology and sacredness of Lake Mansarovar, in addition to being a famous excursion location. The Surinsar Lake and the Surinsar - Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary are also close. Mansar is an ideal place to get away from the stresses of everyday life, reconnect with nature, and find yourself.

Apart from the Umapati Mahadev & Narasimha and Durga temples, Mansar Lake is home to several smaller temples that are routinely visited by devotees. The shrine is surrounded by a large boulder on which several iron chains represent the little serpents that await the Sheshnag's deity.

To seek Sheshnag's blessings, most newlyweds believe it is auspicious to make three circumambulations (Parikarma) around the lake. Many Hindu groups hold their male children's Mundan ritual (first haircut) here. It is also widely believed that the waters of Mansar Lake may cleanse one of their sins. Lake Mansar is known for its flora and wildlife, as well as its wonderful natural setting, in addition to all of the religious and holy events. For seeing various types of fish, turtles, and seasonal birds, a well-lit concrete road with projected view desks has been built. Around 207 kinds of algae, seven species of fish, and 15 species of waterfowl live in the lake. The lovely lake is also a popular boating area.

History

Lake Mansar has a long history dating back to Mahabharat. The Pandavas staged the Ashwamedh Yagna to demonstrate their prowess after the epic battle of Kurukshetra. The former lord of the area, Babruvahan, captured the horse, which was the Yagna's symbol of authority. He murdered Arjun as well as captured the horse, and proudly displayed his victim's head to Ulpi, his mother. She informed Babruvahan that he had slain his father by accident.

A sacred mani (diamond) from Sheshnag (who lived in Patal Lok) was required to resuscitate Arjuna. As a result, Babar carved a surang (tunnel) into the ground with his arrow to create a way to Patal Lok. Surinsar Lake was named after the spring of water that erupted from this tunnel. Babruvahan appeared on the earth with the mani and a spring of water, producing the Mansar Lake, after defeating Sheshnag with another arrow.
