History

A recited text currently mounted to the Vishvanatha temple's entrance gives details about the Chandela monarch Dhanga's erection of a Hindu temple. The inscription's initial date is given as 1056 Vikrami Samvat (999 CE) or 1059 Vikrami Samvat (1002 CE). The building mentioned in this record, as per professor Shobita Punja, might not have been the Vishvanatha shrine. Dhanga may have erected 2 shrines, one for a stone linga and one with a jade linga, as per her. This temple's creator is named Chhichha (or Chiccha) on the monument. It is said that Vishvakarma (the father deity of architecture) constructed the monument's Torana (gateway) after entering the inventor's head.

Architecture

Vishwanath Temple architecture is among the Khajuraho Temple property's masterpieces. The temple has an access veranda, shrine, mandapa, maha-mandapa, and foyer, and it is built on an elevated surface. A colonnade bordered by side aisles surrounds the sanctum. The mandir and entrance have conical roofing, and the chapel has a dome with protrusion and small roof components. Pictures of leopards and elephants may be found on the monument's southern and northern staircases, contributing to the temple's splendor.

Activities

  • Aandhakantaka restraining the blind beast, Natesha whirling in the westward illumination (shabbily disfigured), and Ardhanari are among Shiva's forms shown in the shrine wall's principal apertures.
  • Before actually descending the stairway, stop for a minute as you depart the temple's atrium. Vishvanatha is now the only shrine in Khajuraho that still retains its Nandi-mandapa or portico.
  • Gaze at the sensual statues that were created around 1000 years ago.
  • The Lalguan Mahadev shrine, the Nandi temple, the Parvati chapel, the Mahadev mandir, and the Varaha mandir are all important structures within the Western Compound.
  • Additional prominent shrines in the Eastern Complex include the Javari monument, the Adinatha mandir, as well as the Santinatha temple.
